Summer Internship Funding FAQ’s

  • When am I able to submit an application for internship funding?
    • Funding applications for virtual/remote and in-person/on-site internship opportunities will be accepted beginning February 1, 2024 at 8:00 a.m. CST.
  • What is the deadline for the applications?
    • There are two application deadlines:
      • First-round application deadline date (Rosenfield Internship Program Only) – Friday March 1, 2024 @ 11:59 pm CST
      • Note:  Students must meet with Rosenfield Director, Barb Trish, prior to submitting an application for funding.
      • Second round application deadline date – Tuesday April 9, 2024 @ 11:59 pm CST
  • Can I apply for internship funding if my GPA is below 3.00?
    • Yes, there is not a GPA requirement to apply for internship funding.
  • If I receive a summer funding award, what can that award pay for?
    • Summer internship funding grants will be awarded in one of three flat amounts to students identified as having demonstrated financial need by the Grinnell College Office of Financial Aid. Questions on your financial aid status should be directed to the Office of Financial Aid at 641-269-3250.  See below:
      • Very High/High:          $6,000
      • Moderate/Low:           $4,000
      • No Financial Need:     $2,000
    • Internship funding grants/awards can be used for virtual/remote or in-person/on-site.  Funding grants/awards may be used for rent, travel, food, and other incidentals needed for virtual/remote or in-person/on-site work. Incidentals could include internet services/data plans, software, office supplies (paper, pens, etc.), or related expenses. On-campus experiences, including MAPS, are NOT eligible for a grant or endowed funding.
  • When will I receive my summer funding award if selected?
    • Once award recipients submit their completed acceptance forms and attend the virtual/online internship orientation.  Awards are automatically deposited into your banking account…no exceptions.
  • What if my internship is in a country with a travel warning?
    • The college will not support international travel to a country with a travel warning. If your internship is in your home country, all internship requirements and criteria apply. Funding will be awarded for international, virtual/remote, and in-person/on-site internships.
  • May I apply for internship funding as a fourth-year?
    • Depends. Students must be currently enrolled as full-time students at Grinnell College for spring 2024 and fall 2024 (or accepted into an approved off-campus study program for fall 2024). Thus, fourth-year students graduating in spring (May 2024) or summer of 2024 are ineligible. However, fourth-year students who graduated in December 2024 are ineligible to apply for summer 2024 internship funding.
  • May I apply for internship funding if I get a stipend or wages from my internship organization/agency?
    • If your internship meets the CLS definition of “low-paid” (see definition at bottom of page), then you may apply for funding.
  • Can I apply for funding if I have not secured my internship by application deadline dates for Rosenfield Internship Program only?
    • No, you must have your internship secured (meaning offered and accepted) before applying for funding.
  • What are the requirements I am responsible for during and after my internship if I am awarded internship funding?
    • Pre and post-evaluations, two virtual meetings with the CLS internship supervisor, final evaluation with reflection components, and a thank you a message to any College-affiliated individuals who supported your internship (e.g., providing financial support, arranging the internship, supervising the internship).
  • How do I submit my internship funding application materials?
    • You must apply through an online application by the published application deadline (see above). The application materials required to be considered for funding include the application form, budget, virtual interview through Big Interview, job description, and Supervisor Memorandum of Understanding/Confirmation signed by your internship supervisor.  Application and links to required documents can be found at https://career.grinnell.edu/channels/internship-funding-application/
  • Where can I get assistance with my application materials or get my questions answered?
    • The Center for Careers, Life, and Service oversees the internship funding process. It is highly recommended that you meet with an adviser BEFORE you submit your funding application. You can set up an online appointment with a CLS adviser through your Handshake account or email your availability to career@grinnell.edu.

*Low-paid definition: the financial support (wages, salary, stipend) a student receives from an internship site equates to less than minimum wage at the location of the internship.
