Accessing Handshake and the CLS as an Alum

While the bulk of our time and resources are devoted to our currently enrolled students, we are happy to lend assistance to alums when we are able to do so.

Updating or Creating a Handshake Account

Alums from 2015–present

  • Alums from 2015 or after: please email and let us know you’d like to update your Handshake account with a new email address. We need a gmail or similar personal address, nothing that ends in .edu.
  • You’ll receive a notification from Handshake that your account has been updated. Sign in using that email only (even though Handshake will suggest an .edu address) and proceed with the appointment instructions below.

Alums from Prior to 2015

  • All graduates prior to 2015, click
  • Choose “Sign in with your email address” (the link below the blue GC button). Use a .gmail or another email address.
  • You will then be prompted to create a new account. (If, in the directions, it says use an .edu email, please just continue with your .gmail or similar address.) Be sure to connect with the Grinnell College career center.
  • You’ll receive an email notification from Handshake when your account is active, generally about one business day.
  • Complete as much of your profile as you wish.

Once Your Account Is Active: Scheduling an Appointment with Your Adviser

If you’re not sure who to meet with, we invite you to meet with Donna Miller, Assistant Dean and Executive Director of Career Communities.

  • Login to your Handshake account. (See note below.)
  • Click on “Career Center” in the upper right corner.
  • Select “Appointments” then “Schedule a New Appointment.”
  • Under “Choose a Category,” navigate to and select “I want to meet with…”
  • Select “Your Adviser by Name” (for example, Donna Miller) and choose a day and time that works best for your schedule.
  • When prompted to select an “Appointment Medium,” please choose either “Virtual on Handshake” or “Phone.”
A visual indication of the link to sign in to Handshake, found below the "Grinnell College Login" button.

Please note: Do not try to sign in through the “Grinnell College Login.” Choose the link “Sign in with your email address” (as shown in the orange box here) and use the updated non-edu address you’ve shared with us. Thank you.
