Please be advised that the application period for the March 2026 Externship Experience has now closed.
Saint Ann’s School is an arts-based, three-year-old through twelfth grade, Independent School in Brooklyn, New York. We do not give grades and encourage all of our students to be creative members of our community. Shannon teaches in the Recreational Arts department. (In a different school, the department would be called Physical Education.) Working with all ages starting with Kindergarten, Shannon encourages students to find joy in movement as they learn what their bodies can do.
The extern will get to see the energy of a school with no grades and committed to the arts. They will be able to watch enthusiastic first graders learning to tumble, reticent middle schoolers who want to push boundaries, and decisive (or maybe indecisive) high schoolers who are growing into young adults. By witnessing the classes, the student may see educational practices that are successful, or possibly, unsuccessful, and be able to reflect on their own educational journey.
Returning host Shannon Carr ’88 (she/her) is a longtime educator at Saint Ann’s School, an acclaimed arts-based independent school in Brooklyn known for its creativity-driven, non-graded approach to learning. A history major at Grinnell, Shannon is now in her 28th year of teaching.
The extern will have a bedroom and bathroom and will commute to work with Shannon, who will cover meals during the job shadow. Barry Ancona ’68 and Polly Ancona Carr ’17 are a part of Shannon’s family.
