The Summer Health Professions Education Program (SHPEP) is a free summer enrichment program focused on improving access to information and resources for first- and second-year students interested in the health professions. SHPEP’s goal is to strengthen the academic proficiency and career development of students underrepresented in the health professions and prepare them for a successful application and matriculation to health professions schools. These students include, but are not limited to, individuals who identify as African American/Black, American Indian and Alaska Native and Hispanic/Latino, and who are from communities of socioeconomic and educational disadvantage.
SHPEP is implemented at 12 universities across the nation. Each institution provides scholars with academic enrichment in the basic sciences and math, clinical experiences, career development activities, learning and study skills seminars, and a financial planning workshop. Professions include dentistry, medicine, nursing, optometry, pharmacy, physical therapy, and public health. Housing and meals are covered by the host institution. Participants also receive a small stipend as well as a travel allowance.
Please visit the website for more information, including eligibility requirements.
NOTE: Students are strongly encouraged to review their application with the Health Pros Director before submitting it. The application period runs Nov. 1 through Feb. 5 but applicants are encouraged to submit early in the cycle.
