Ready to Volunteer? Community Partner Highlight: Connections Support Center

As the weather slowly, hopefully ever so slowly, turns to winter, we are highlighting the Connections Support Center. Winter assistance is very appreciated to combat the winter blues, as it is hard for members to get out.  Connections is located near Second Mile Thrift Shop, just west of Fareway.

Mission: Connections, formerly known as Station Clubhouse, is a place where people battling different mental illnesses can socialize and gather in a supported environment. Connections is a safe place, drug and violence-free, and you can also help us by spreading the word that our doors are open to anyone who doesn’t feel safe.

Needs:  Connections is open from 9 to 3 daily, so activities other than transportation help would occur during those hours.  Volunteers are needed for:

  • Our new fitness center: teaching exercises and healthy habits, working with people with limited mobility, including wheelchair-bound.
  • Craft activities: design your own to share or join in to help one we have scheduled.  We have a lot of crafts supplies!
  • Cooking and having lunch with the members or a leading or helping with a baking project for an activity.  We have a full kitchen.
  • Transportation to doctor appointments, the courthouse in Montezuma, and area food pantries.
  • Outings within the Grinnell community as well as Wells Fargo Center in Des Moines, and other activities as opportunities come up.
  • Weekly mental health group: having one-on-one support and companionship during the group session can be very helpful for members.
